Samantha Long, founder of the Spirits of Bronte Drinks Company, is a ‘Yorkshire lass’ who has lived in Bronte Country for over 30 years. As a lover of small batch gins, she was inspired by the rugged landscape and literary heritage of her local area to create an old-school drink that tasted like when ‘gin was gin’. She saw a gap in the market for something with a citrus kick but a super-smooth finish and has worked with one of the UK’s oldest and most prestigious distilleries to create a modern twist on an 18th century classic that has a truly unique taste.

She tasked Engage Comms with getting this start-up brand off the ground in a hugely competitive marketplace. We came up with a cost-effective strategy for gaining maximum exposure with a quality, relevant audience and keeping them engaged through storytelling in a recognisable and memorable tone of voice.

Launch activity over the first six months following the launch of Spirits of Bronte Drinks Company’s first product included a new ecommerce website with quality content to organically support search engine optimization. In the first six months of the website, we monitored the user journey to ensure that drop-off rates could be minimized by continually updating and improving the content. The average bounce rate for this period was 28% with users spending on average over two minutes on the site per visit.

Supporting the website, we also set up social media (building up thousands of followers across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram from scratch), email marketing, stockist engagement, support with events, development of printed materials, and media relations (which included a full page feature in the Yorkshire Post’s Life & Style supplement). A Yorkshire Lass Gin was named in several listings for best Yorkshire gins, and secured a wide range of stockists across the North of England and beyond. This meant that the company could invest in moving production to a local distillery using spring water from the Haworth moors and expanding its product range to include a ‘brambleberry’ flavour gin.

“When I came up with the idea of launching my own gin brand, I took inspiration from my local area of Bronte Country for the recipe, concept, and branding. As a start-up business with no background in the drinks industry, I was taking a big risk but I knew I had to invest in good marketing support to get it off the ground and be taken seriously amongst the hundreds of small batch gins already on the market.
